Lander Center for Educational Research presents a Summer Mathematics Teachers Institute

Proportional Reasoning & The Common Core

with Anne Burgunder Master Teacher of Mathematics Education - NYU Steinhardt

Have all students been guided to make meaning of the mathematics they’ve learned? Are all students fluent computationally? Our students must think flexibly and reason proportionally to succeed in higher level mathematics.

Receive a certificate for six (6) PD hours, applicable to New York State’s certification requirement of 175 PD hours every five(5) years, by participating in a one day institute to learn about using various models to help our students develop the kind of mathematical reasoning needed to ensure their success in the rigorous expectations set forth by the Common Core

  • Explormathematics related to what students of mathematics are expected to know & understand via CCSS;
  •  Examine classroom video clips and student artifacts related to proportional reasoning;
  •  Explore materials designed to address the CCSS content and mathematical practices;
  •  Look for critical mathematical links that will ensure students successfully transition in enhancing their competency mathematicsm from elementary school to middle school to high school; and
  •  Develop a deeper understanding of how to use mathematical models (e.g. the ratio table) to provide access to rigorous mathematics for all students.
